Volunteer food Shopper

Role Summary

We are working in partnership with St Albans Community Centre and they require a volunteer shopper to help older people and those with health conditions to remain living independently at home. 

Main activities/tasks

  • Obtain shopping list form staff at St Albans
  • Attend agreed supermarket and make up individual customer’s orders.
  • Make sensible decisions when alternatives must be found.
  • Process through checkout and obtain a receipt as proof of purchase.
  • Drop the food shopping to the client’s home address.
  • Ensure payment is received by cheque, cash or card payment. 
  • Return all receipts to St Albans Community Centre.
  • Record mileage.

Relevant experience/skills

To be passionate about working with client’s in the community that need additional support. To be confident when dealing with people. Enthusiasm and basic literacy skills are required to undertake this task. To have a clean driving licence.  

Training and support

We have an induction process, during which we give volunteers the information we believe they need to enjoy their time with us. The Community Navigator will give volunteers any specific information they need before starting. Volunteers will have supervision with the Community Navigator to allow them to give and receive feedback about their work. They are encouraged to bring up any concerns or questions as soon as they arise and make an input into the overall development of our Centre.


Mornings – preferably Friday. A routine can be established and agreed with the Community Navigator.

A DBS certificate is required.
