Scarecrow

When did you start at the Dorothy Parkes Allotment?

I believe I am the newest member of staff as I am only aware of being here about 4 weeks ago when some lovely people in Smethwick introduced me to the Chief Executive Officer, Rob Bruce who brought me here to say hello to Karen the Allotment Project Coordinator.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Dorothy Parkes allotment?

I believe I am what you humans call a ‘key worker’ and therefore am allowed to work the number of hours that I have been employed for? Because of these long hours, there is no time to go down to the centre

What one thing would you change at the Dorothy Parkes allotments?

Well, Karen, who is developing and looking after me has mentioned another scarecrow who lives here and I am hoping that one evening when all is quiet in the allotments, we will be able to meet up and share a cup of tea and a natter together?

What are your hobbies?

I love knitting and if you look closely at my clothing, (don’t I look fabulous?), you will see that I have knitted a jumper with a rainbow on it which shows my support for all those humans who is working on the front line. Because I am so attractive, I don’t seem to have to scare many birds away.

What is your favourite film?

I love horrors and when I lived on my previous farm, Aunt Sally, who used to be a fairground doll in the circus, and I sneaked into the cinema to watch the Dark Night of the Scarecrow. It was really scary and made me scared to go back to my post in the field but the Crowman was able to re-assure me that the film wasn’t real and that he only ever made nice scarecrows.

What is your favourite food?

Scarecrows don’t need food to help them live but I did have a Cornetto in the cinema and I thought it was lovely.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

I haven’t done any travelling yet as I want to see what Smethwick is like, I have been told by Karen that Oldbury is a nice place, so maybe I will go there one day?

What is your favourite book?

I am currently reading a book co-written by Julia Donaldson, who also wrote the Gruffalo. It is a lovely book about how two scarecrows meet and eventually marry each other.

What makes you laugh?

Scarecrow jokes. These two are my favourites at the moment:

I saw a human fighting with a scarecrow once. I thought,

“He’s just clutching at straws”.

Question: How does a scarecrow drink?

Answer: With a straw….

Tell us something interesting about yourself?

I believe I am the only female scarecrow on these allotments!
